Doing Hard Time is the title for sculpture made during the 1980s when I taught ceramics to incarcerated men in a California state prison. The position as Artist-in residence at the prison gave me the opportunity to experience the dark side of reality in a privileged capacity. While I got an intimate view of the “Justice System” I could walk in and out with freedom. I felt exposed to incredible insight into the deep and dark. I certainly grew as an artist and human being. The art work I made, inside and out, during this time reflects finding balance through creative expression.
These sculptures speak of the beauty of the human spirit wherever it is encountered. |
