My intent in making the magical, androgynous and figurative Prophet and Spirit Protector Series sculptures is deliberate. They are a very personal response to the human folly evidenced by shallow disregard for environmental consequences. They speak to the vulnerability of the human condition. Layered surfaces enclose life-suggesting volume, the tactile surfaces beg to be touched while spikes ward off such familiarity. The sculptures are both witnesses and protectors. They endeavor to communicate at a level beyond words. And to be made of clay. At once so enduring to be the oldest preservation of ancient civilizations and yet so fragile to enter oblivion with the push of a finger.
Settling back into my studio in California after spending a year in Zimbabwe, I can acknowledge that my work, particularly as the synthesis of my experience and creative spirit, reflects a unique and valid perspective. |
