I used the clay box format, typical of my earlier work to express the basic archetypal information inherent in these pieces. When building a sculpture, my most conscious thought is to “contain space.” The clay becomes a skin giving shape to the void, the space within.
The black box and its expansion into vessel “figure” forms are symbolic terminology for the traditional, magical holding place for spirit. The human condition, particularly articulated from the view point of the individual in relationship to landscape, history, environment, social systems and inner self is the conceptual theme of this work. The artistic intent was to develop a visual statement which subtly extends the artist’s emotional and intellectual vision in response to beauty, fragility, exploitation, rigidity, control, confinement and justice. |
