Cincinnati, Ohio 2003
Marjorie Wallace told me in a phone call that she had been invited to work on a public art project in Cincinnati. It was a collaborative International Mosaic Project created by Jan Brown Checco through the partnership of The Park Board, The School of Art of the University of Cincinnati and The sister Cities Association. Seven master ceramists from around the world came together in Cincinnati, Ohio, to create a unique public art piece. The theme of the piece, its location and the five-week event itself combined to make a statement for the absolute need for peace among people and nations. Knowing that this trip was Marjorie’s first trip off the African continent and as we were longing to see each other after seven years, I went to Cincinnati for several weeks, primarily to visit Marjorie. Of course, the large university studio work space was dynamic with eight artists at work. It was easy to fit in helping with the many tasks associated with clay work. And it was a real joy to meet the artists and be part of this international happening. When the whole cast returned the next spring for dedication of their installed work in the Peace Park along the Ohio River, I was privileged to join them. |
